My Work and Me

Chiseling No. 23.jpg

My first art piece was a cross I made for my family's priest at age 5.  I had glued two pieces of wood together and drawn a flower at the cross point with red and green crayons.  We moved away, life went on, and I made more stuff.

In my teens I started painting intentionally and made paper cuttings and art books.  In my twenties and thirties, I opened a flower shop in San Diego and continued to use color, design and composition in all my arrangements including bridal and corporate work.  I started painting more frequently.

In my forties I was awarded a grant from Smith College in Massachusetts where I became an art major.  During that time, I worked at Skera Gallery in Northampton, Massachusetts.  Still painting, I independently learned to make metal work jewelry by hand and sold pieces through Arts Unlimited Gallery in Massachusetts and at The Gathering Place Art Studio in New Hampshire.  I taught jewelry classes and workshops locally.  I started teaching other people to paint at an Introduction to Painting class, as well as some other small painting classes at The Gathering Place and in my studio.

Now, thousands of projects later, painting has again become my primary interest.  I am currently making highly textured works inspired by the amazing personalities of dilapidated buildings.

I was told recently that my childhood priest had died, and that he had requested that the cross I made him so long ago be held in his hands when he was gone.  The request had been fulfilled.

47 years later.

Art is Powerful.  I'm making some more.
